Riveria Maya #1 Destination

As one could have expected, data released from Hoteles.com as part of the Expedia group places the Riviera Maya firmly in first place on the Top 20 Destinations list, claiming more growth in the number of searches throughout the month of January 2011, peak season for vacationers.

Searches this year rose by 262% than that of previous years, another good indicator that people are becoming far more aware that most of Mexico is still very safe despite the sensationalized media depiction of drug-related violence.

In fact, statistics for 2010 show that over 3.3 million tourists visited the Mayan Riviera last year, of which 37% were American, 20% Canadian, 22% European and 17% national visitors with the remainder from a variety of places all over the world.

Also to be noted is the rebound of such tourism in leaps and bounds after the difficult last couple of years 2009 and 2010 during the same season. Hoteliers report on average for this season a 91% occupancy rate and comment that the Yucatan is back on track with tourism back into full swing.

In fact, Jesus Martín Medina of the Director General of Tourism, recently stressed that the index of current occupations based of off tourism would be maintained until Easter, although predictions did not rule out that occupation rates could even be increased up until and after this time.
