
With a budget
over the 170 million pesos, the largest, most modern museum by the official
Mexican Historical Foundation has opened in Cancun. The largest museum
opened since 1987, it is open to the public and allows Cancun residents
and tourists alike to view over 350 archaeological objects from the ancient
Mayan world.
Officially open since November 2nd, the new Mayan wonderworld is the center of attention to those who want to learn more about one of the most recognized cultures on the planet, the ancient Maya.

The brand new
Mayan Museum replaced the former Archaeological Museum in Cancun; which was
closed in 2005 after the damages sustained in Hurricane Wilma.
Consisting of
three exhibition halls, two are permanent and the other rotates
temporary exhibitions various times throughout the year.
Room # 1 is
dedicated to the Maya of Quintana Roo. The first time this display has
appeared in public, the content was discovered in 2002 in the cenote of
Palmas, and now the artifacts recovered share the name. The estimated age
of those on display date back to the ice age nearly 10,000 years ago.
This section also provides a chronological journey through a long of the
history the state of Quintana Roo, which starts 14,000 years ago. And
then focuses on the Pre-Hispanic Era, from the Pre-Classic Era (350 – 250 a.c.)
Exhibition Hall
# 2 concentrates on the cultural diversity of the regions that make up the
Central area of the peninsula. Showing a reverence for Mayan art, architecture
and worldview there aer pieces from as far away as the ancient Mayan cities
in Palenque, Chiapas, and sculptures and architectural elements from
Chichén Itzá, Yucatan as well as engraved bricks from Comalcalco, Tabasco.
